About the Morgan County Historical Society
The Morgan County Historical Society, based in Jacksonville Illinois, was established to collect, maintain and share information about the people, places and events of Morgan County Illinois. The Society was formed at a meeting held November 18, 1904 at the Jacksonville Public Library.
The primary activities of the Morgan County Historical Society (MCHS) include a number of historical programs for the public throughout the year, the publication of books concerning local history, and producing the educational and entertaining Prairieland Chautauqua in September of each year. For a number of years the MCHS has also had an Underground Railroad Committee that manages Woodlawn Farm and promotes the history of the Underground Railroad in Morgan County. The Society was also gifted the old Jacksonville Post Office by the John Deere Insurance Company and has been renovating it so that it can be used by the City of Jacksonville's Heritage Cultural Center as a museum of local history.
